It's the countdown to Christmas, so for the next few weeks we are diving into the Old and New Testaments regarding the coming of Jesus, His birth. So, grab that Christmas cookie and glass of milk and let's go! The scriptures will be from the English Standard Version and commentaries.
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
So, you might be wondering why we are going to Isaiah for this post. Let's look at Isaiah for a minute. He was one of the greatest prophets, spending the majority of his life in Jerusalem. He writes in his book not only about the judgment coming, but he writes about the Redeemer and salvation. The Redeemer-Jesus!
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given.
This is destined for Royalty, as a Son of David. This is a promise God gave to King David in Second Samuel 7. Jesus is the fulfillment of the promise. But He will come as a child, a baby. While the people were looking for a King, they were not expecting a baby. Son is the fullness of God, as He took on human form.
and the government shall be upon His shoulder.
This basically means He will accept the burden of ruling.
and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
These are the characteristics/traits of Jesus, as well as being His titles.
Wonderful Counselor-He will offer wise and perfect counsel. He will carry out God's plan. He is wise beyond any human on Earth.
Mighty God-He has divine power. He is empowered by God and will represent Him on the battlefield. He will implement supernatural strategies to defeat the enemy.
Everlasting Father-His reign will never cease. This is eternity. He will forever be our compassionate Provider and Protector.
Prince of Peace-His rule will bring wholeness and well-being. Tranquility will come in the midst of chaos.
Don't you just love Who He is! My question to you today is which one of those characteristics are the most important to you today? And yes, they change from day to day. For me, He is my Peace. I have experienced His peace in the midst of chaos over the past three years, as He was the Mighty God that was fighting the battle. He counseled and still is counseling me, often to tell me to be quiet, so I can hear Him. He is my Everlasting Father. I will be with Him for eternity. I hope you will be with Him, too!
May your day be blessed. Remember to reach out for questions. I'm praying for you.
Merry Christmas,
V
